Bio

Alma Lois Moore Jones, more affectionately known as Amy, died peacefully at the age of 94 surrounded by family. Her life was rich with joy, service, stories, and just the right amount of sass. She was the kind of person who made you feel like family, whether you shared her last name or just sat next to her at church once. Born in Dallas, Texas in 1931, Amy was the daughter of Pearl Mae and Marion Gayle Moore. Her parents gave her the strong roots of faith, hard work, and Texas charm—plus an eye for a good story and a gift for remembering the important details (and all the juicy ones, too). She was so proud to be a 5th generation Texan. Amy's childhood in Depression-era Dallas was full of grit and grace. She graduated from North Dallas High School in 1948, and though she was quiet and petite, Amy had a quiet confidence and a keen mind. After school, she began working in the insurance business at Great American Life for 14 years - impressing everyone with her organization, determination, and quick wit. In 1949, Amy attended a friend's party where she met a very persistent (and somewhat argumentative) Bill Jones. Bill offered her a ride home, she politely declined, but he somehow managed to show up in her world again (and again). Six weeks later, they were engaged. On February 4, 1950, Amy and Bill married at the First Baptist Church in Famers Branch. Amy and Bill welcomed two children into their hearts and home through adoption, Brian and Karen, and together the Jones family built a life of purpose, adventure, and endless activities. In 1969, they left Dallas behind and moved to Mt. Pleasant. It was a big move (Amy was not altogether thrilled), but she eventually rooted herself in her new community and never looked back. Known for her kindness and patience, she helped generations of children learn Bible stories, sing songs, and understand that church was a place of joy and love. She often hosted after-church lunches and Bible study gatherings, making sure that even the smallest children felt special and seen. She never missed a PTA meeting or a school event and served as room mother more times than anyone could count. She was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, and a driver for every field trip. Before her move to East Texas, Amy was a faithful volunteer at Children's Medical Center in Dallas with her sister Joanie. In Mt. Pleasant, she was a dedicated member of the 20th Century Club, where she held multiple leadership positions and graciously hosted club meetings in her home. Amy also gave back through her work with the Titus Regional Medical Center Foundation, where she served with energy and pride. She helped plan and execute countless events, none more beloved than the annual Champagne & Chocolate fundraiser—a delicious affair that raised spirits and funds in equal measure. In addition to her civic contributions, Amy was the "glorious historian" of the Moore and Jones families. She had an uncanny ability to remember names, dates, cousins twice removed, and who married whom in what church in which county. She never met a newspaper clipping she did not love. If your name, your grandchild's name, or your high school ex-boyfriend's name was printed in the Mt. Pleasant Tribune, you could count on receiving a neatly trimmed article in the mail from Amy, often with a Post-it note that said, "Thought you might like this." Amy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill, her cherished sister Joanie, and her loving son Brian. She is survived by her daughter Karen Owen (John), daughter-in-law Ginger Clower (Troy) and grandchildren Russ Allton, Emily Allton, Avery Owen, and Derek Jones along with an extended family that includes countless nieces and nephews—and generations of friends, church members, and neighbors who were lucky enough to know her. In honor of Amy, we encourage you to clip a newspaper story, tell a family tale, label a few photographs, or write a handwritten note to someone you love. Better yet, volunteer your time, open your home to others, and never miss a chance to make someone feel like they belong. That is what Amy would do. We want to thank Amy's team of angels, Gricel Garrett, Nubia Corona, Gay Lampar, Lili Corona, Angela Flores, and 'The Hunk' who took care of her with dignity and love for the past 18 months. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 9th at 11a.m. at the Pavillion at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Amy can be made to Ignite Youth Club which provides affordable, reliable, safe, and quality afterschool and summer programs to Titus County youth and families in need. Donations can be made at www.ignitemp.org or 1125 N. Jefferson Ave, Mt Pleasant, TX 75455.
