Lionel Babl, age 89, of O’Neill, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2016, at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill. Lionel R. Babl was born to Lillian (Heeb) and John Babl on April 30, 1927 in O’Neill, Nebraska. Lionel's siblings include Johnny, Luann, Arnie and Elwin. His formal education ended at 8th grade when he started farming and ranching with his father northwest of O’Neill on the family farm until he retired 20 years ago. Lionel married Helen Grutsch (Rector) on September 20, 1972, at the Catholic Church in Emmet, Nebraska. He and Helen owned Babl’s Offices and Apartments for 20 years. Lionel had an instant family as Helen had nine children, two girls and seven boys. Lionel was once described as an Angel for his willingness to take on the responsibility of raising such a large family, with six children still at home. He was patient and gentle in his approach in teaching the younger children how to drive tractors, fix fence and work with livestock. He had a great sense of humor and could always get a laugh. He was a kind, loving and honest man. He was truly in love with Helen. He was a very devoted husband and cherished his life with her. Those two were known as the “Love Birds” by the family. Lionel and Helen did extensive traveling together seeing 48 of the 50 states. Lionel was affectionately known as Lion by all the family. Lionel was a WWII veteran, serving in AAB California Suisum from 1945 to 1946. He was a devout and lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was the perfect Dad, Father-in-Law and Grandpa and all the kids loved and adored him. He has 28 grandkids and 31 great grandkids. He will be fondly remembered and missed by many. He finally gets to be with Helen. Lionel is survived by: his children, Cathy Grutsch, George Grutsch (Dianne), Bernard Grutsch (Marilyn), Bill Grutsch (Kathy), Rae McMahon (Mike), Ruth Hornback (Alan), Joe Grutsch (Sharon), Tony Grutsch (Ilene) and Tim Grutsch (Marcy), his sister Luann Gorgen (Dean), brother Arnie, sister-in-laws, Sharon Babl and Geraldine Babl and his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: his parents, wife, Helen in 2012, son, Jim Grutsch, brothers Elwin and Johnny Babl. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. Burial in the O’Neill Calvary Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post #93. Obituary information from Biglin's Mortuary of O'Neill, Nebraska.
