Son of James DeMasters and Arvilla "Elmira" Miller also known as Marcellus DeMasters Married Mary Jane "Molly" Sharp on August 11, 1870 in Kaufman County, Texas. They had (7) sons and (2) daughters. One daughter, Mennie, died in Texas in 1894 when she was just age 5. One son, Tom DeMasters b. 1880, disappeared in 1903. He borrowed money from his brother James and said he "had to get out of town fast." He left on the train that day and none of the family ever heard from Tom again. Brother James always believed that Tom may have been a victim of foul play at the hands of some local gamblers he had been involved with. Marques went by the nickname of "Fate" DeMasters to most of his family, but he is listed on several census differently. Census records have him as Marcellus, Lafayette (his middle name), Marcus or Marques. The latter name, "Marques," was likely his official first name, as that was the name listed for his land grant in New Mexico in 1918. His son, James DeMasters, middle name was Marquett, and passed on to me as well (grt-grandson to Marques). He was a Deputy Sherriff in Scurry, Kaufman County, Texas for several years. In 1906 the family relocated from Texas to New Mexico after hearing of free land. They lived very near Estancia, Torrance County, NM, but went back to Texas briefly in 1909. By late 1911 they returned to New Mexico and lived near Cedarvale, Torrance County, NM. In August 1918 a land patent grant for 160 acres in the name of "Marques L. DeMasters" in Torrance County, New Mexico was issued (near Cedarvale, New Mexico). One can view the land record at the Bureau of Land Management web site: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/results/default.aspx?searchCriteria=type=patent|st=NM|cty=|ln=Demasters|sp=true|sw=true|sadv=false The family can also be found living in Cedarvale on the 1920 census. Marques died there in 1927 and was buried in the Corona Cemetery nearby (in Lincoln County New Mexico). His widow moved back to Texas about 1932 and lived in Crandall, Kaufman County, Texas. She died there in 1946 and is buried at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Scurry, Kaufman County, Texas.
