Maria S. Owens Feb. 17, 1923 - Jan. 2, 2009 Maria S. Owens, 85, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2009, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. Services are set for 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 0 P.M. at McCauley Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, Texas. Burial will follow at Bald Prairie Cemetery in Robertson County. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, January 5, with the family present at the funeral home. Maria was born on February 17, 1923, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jacobus Johannes and Jannetie Adriana Schieving, both born in Holland. From 1941 to 1945, Maria worked for the Union Pacific Railroad servicing and icing passenger and troop trains. It was at this time that she met her future husband, Jack, who was an MP on a troop train. Maria married Jack Taylor Owens on February 19, 1945, in Los Angeles, Calif. In 1946, they moved to Boone Prairie, Texas where they farmed until 1947. Jack re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served at Roswell, N.M., where they lived until 1950. From 1950-1955, they lived in Franklin, where they were in the Cattle business. In 1955, they moved to Houston, due the drought and operated the cattle business only on weekends. While in Houston, Maria was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, Melbourne Ward, and served as President of the Relief Society and Primary President, Teacher and Counselor. In 1993, Maria and Jack retired and moved back to Franklin, where they were members of the Hearne Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS. Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Jack Taylor Owens. Survivors include her son, Harvey Taylor Owens and wife Carol, of Houston; granddaughter, Amanda Marianna Owens, of Brenham; brother, Theme "Tim" B. Schieving of Kearns, Utah; numerous nieces and nephews.
