Amanda B. "Mandy" Potts Phillips was the sixth child of 12 children born to James P. Potts & Nancy Susan Goodjoin Potts. She was probably born in Titus Co., Texas. However the family were living in DeSoto Co., MS as late as Oct. 1850. They were in Titus Co. before 1860. Her daughter, Emma Phillips Adams said they were Black Dutch, a term also used in the early 1880s for any dark skinned nationality. Other family members understood that there was Indian blood. So far I've not been able to prove it. She married Joseph Richard Phillips about 1873 in Rains Co., Texas as best can be determined. They were the parents of four girls, with the oldest M.E. "Lizzie" dying young about 1884. Lizzie may be buried at Greenview Cemetery also as are many other Potts & Phillips family members. Amanda Phillips raised a garden, sewed and made quilts as long as she was physically able. The picture shown here was taken on her porch step some where in the southern part of Hopkins County as best the family can remember. She was probably living with daughter Carrie Bridges in Greenville when she died.
