David Wightman Bates, 83, went to be with his Heavenly Father June 29, 2016. David was born Sept. 18, 1932, to David and Norma Bates in Hale Center. He graduated from Levelland High School in 1950, and he was inducted into the army in 1953. David was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was honorably discharged in 1955 as a sergeant. David returned to school and received his Bachelor's Degree in 1960, and a Master's Degree in Education in 1963. His career included school administration, teaching and school counseling. He retired in 1991 from Taylor ISD as a high school counselor. David became a Christian at an early age. He truly loved Jesus, his Lord and Savior. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Round Rock. David loved his family and friends, and enjoyed spending time with them. He enjoyed reading Louie L'Amour novels, playing with his dogs and traveling with his wife, and best friend, Shirley Bates. Around a campfire, at his family reunion or at the neighborhood coffee, he enjoyed telling a good joke. David is survived by his wife, Shirley Johnson Bates; daughters Dee Jones and husband Mike of Azle; and Debbie Bates of Belton; his grandchildren Jacob Jones, Andy Jones and Brian David Adams, and his great grandson Grey. David is the only boy in a family of five girls. His sisters Jean, Jane and Ann preceded him in death. His two surviving sisters are Elizabeth Barnett of Shallowater, and Bobbie Kerbo of Willis, Oklahoma. David's funeral services will be held at the Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Pflugerville, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 3.
