Bio
Samuel A. LAIRD was born at Athens, Ohio, April 15, 1853, and departed this life at the home of his daughter in Shenandoah, Iowa, February 7, 1929, at the age of 75 years, nine months and 23 days. He came with his parents to Jacksonville, Ill., november, 1864, and in September, 1865, came to Ringgold county, Iowa, where he has since made his home, and while permitted to live and enjoy the progress made in southern Iowa, he also knew the privations of frontier life here. On January 1, 1874, hewas united in marriage to Sarah E. CALDWELL. To this union were born four sons and six daughters, his wife and two sons having preceded him in death. His wife passed away four years ago. They celebrated their golden wedding January 1, 1924, and their mutal happiness ended the same year. Those [daughters] remaining to mourn his loss are Mrs. Myrtle JACOBS, of Mount Ayr; Mrs. Grace KNITTLE, of Shenandoah; Mrs. Lillie WEHRLE, of Kellerton; Mrs. Ethel CASADY, of Hatfield, Mo.; Mrs. Pearl KNITTLE, of Shenandoah; L. R. and F. D. LAIRD, of Kellerton, and Mrs. Winnie STANLEY, of Andover, Mo. Beside his immediate family he leaves 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and two brothers, W. C. LAIRD, of Mount Ayr, and F. H. LAIRD, of Kellerton, and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. He was converted in 1891 and united with the Salem United Evangelical church. He was a charter member of that organization and has since held membership there. He was not boastful of christian graces but led a quiet, consistent christian life, always standing for right and denouncing evil. His last illness, caused by that baffling disease, cancer, was greatly prolonged and his suffering intense, but he bore it all with great fortitude. All was done that could be done by loving hands and medical skill to relieve his suffering but with little avail, until the loving Father called him home. He had told loved ones that he had put his trust and his all in the hands of the Lord and the end came peacefully. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. E. CLARK, of Kellerton, at the Salem church at two o'clock Sunday afternoon and burial made in Tedrow Cemetery.
