Bio

Agnes (Clopton) Scott was the oldest daughter and fourth of Benjamin Michaux and Justina Augusta (Haden) Clopton's nine children (only five survived to adulthood). Her parents had emigrated from Tennessee to the new Republic of Texas in 1837, received a land grant for 640 acres, opened a blacksmith shop in Bastrop, TX and ran a corn and cotton enterprise. It was in this frontier setting that Agnes was born on 3 Oct 1843 in Bastrop County in the Republic of Texas. Agnes was 24 years old when she married Walter Patrick Scott on 3 Oct 1867 in Bastrop County, Texas. They had six children, four of whom survived to adulthood: Ella "Ula" (Scott) Easley (1869-1905) Fanny Scott (1872-1872) died in infancy Samuel Sheasby Scott (1875-1921) Arthur Owen Scott (1877-1930) Charlie Mae "Mila" (Scott) Burnett (1880-1942) Wesley Clarke Scott (1884-1892) died young All were born in Bastrop County, Texas. Agnes and Walter farmed corn and cotton on over two hundred acres of land near Smithville, Texas. After Walter's death in 1904, Agnes deeded her farm land to her sons Sam Sheasby Scott and Arthur Owen Scott with the provision that they settle all debts on the property. (Her oldest daughter, Ella, may have died prior to this transaction, but no mention was made of her younger daughter Charlie Burnett, although Charlie was definitely alive at the time.) While Sam followed through, Arthur failed to meet this obligation, and Agnes later revised the deed giving Arthur ten acres free and clear and the balance of her farm to Sam. Some time between 1910 and 1912 (after her daughter Ella's death), Agnes bought a home on a town lot in Elgin and lived there until her death in 1916. In Apr 1912, Agnes deeded this property to her orphaned granddaughter Mary Belle Easley, but she retained a life estate. In Oct 1912, Sam purchased from Mary Belle (Easley) and her new husband of three months, Bennett D. Merritt, the claim to Agnes' city lot and house in Elgin and also any claim Mary Belle might have on the estate of Agnes and Walter Scott upon Agnes' death. No record of Agnes' death has been located though her birth and death information is recorded in the Clopton genealogical record compiled by Lucy Lane Erwin: "The Ancestry of William Clopton of York County, Virginia," p. 168. It is believed that Agnes is buried in an unmarked grave in Young's Prairie Cemetery near her husband Walter and son Arthur. Because no record of her death and burial has been found, however, it is possible that her son Sam may have laid her to rest closer to himself and her parents in Elgin City Cemetery.
