John Wiley Byrd (March 23, 1923 - June 28, 2016) Bonham- John Wiley Byrd, beloved husband of Peggy Owen Byrd, died June 28, 2016 after a long Alzheimer’s illness. He was 93 years old. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX. John was born on March 23, 1923 in Robertson County to Ike and May (McFarland) Byrd. He served in the United States Army during World War II. As an adult, he lived in Houston and worked in the pipeline oil industry. He traveled to many countries working for Brown Root and later in Alaska on the Trans Alaska Pipeline. He was a sportsman, hunting, fishing and playing golf. After retirement, he played golf daily, often winning the City of Houston Golf Club Tournaments. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He is survived by wife, Peggy, three children, John Jr., Karen, and Michael; 2 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; a number of wonderful nieces and nephews who live in the Houston/ Huntsville area. Also surviving are brother in law and sister in law, James and Sylvia Clark, good friends, Densel Crumby of Bonham, and Jim Stewart of Anchorage Alaska. After retirement, Peggy and John returned to Bonham where Peggy was born. He liked Bonham and until his illness hit him, he was in the coffee shop daily and later golfed and made the garage sales.
