Bio

Not proven buried here, but seems likely, with other family members. Joel is the son of Nicholas Long and Margaret Turner. Joel and family are found in 1830 in Roane County and 1840 in Rhea County, and his widow was listed in Rhea county in 1850 and probably 1860 with their son Nicholas. Joel's will, written in November 1847 and probated in July 1850 mentioned the following family members: Wife Elizabeth - to receive life use of dwelling Children - most received furniture, livestock, and a young slave. Three of his children also inherited land. They were named as follows: Margaret Loden Mary Henry Ann Long Nicholas Long (300 acres) Martha Jane Majors Elizabeth, wife of John Gillens, (she died July 20, 1846 per Joel's will) Allis Moore Long (200 acres) Leonard Long (260 acres) Susannah Long Provision was made for one slave as follows: "If my servant Celia out-lives her mistress, that she remain among my children not to be treated as a slave, but to have the liberty of going to and seeing her children when necessary while in her reach and what she does bea for those with whom she lives and it is my will and desire that be decently supported when she becomes old and not able to work and after she dies to be decently interred, the funeral expences to bair eaqueal [sic] on each one of the heirs." Executors named: Nicholas H. Long, Leonard Long, J. Long and Ann Long [It is unknown who J. Long is, perhaps a son born 1810-1815 per 1830 and 1840 census, but it seems odd he wouldn't be named in the will, unless he received his share earlier, as eldest son. Or perhaps J. Long is another relative and the son born 1810-1815 died before his father.]
