Bio

Angelina “Angie” Maria Martin died unexpectedly in Bakersfield, CA, on June 2, 2016, at the age of 83. Angie is survived by her husband, Bob; adult children: Rick and spouse Susan, Vicki and spouse Dan, Robert and spouse Connie, Russell and spouse June, Teresa and spouse Scott, Randy and spouse Kim; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces; and numerous “adopted” kids. Angie was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Aloisie Repka; siblings, Evelyn Eldredge, Aggie Bayus, Julius Repka, and Louise Bishop. There are many other surviving members of Angie’s extended family from her home state of Texas to folks she spent time with at CADA, EBHS, and in the Bucknell neighborhood. Angie considered all of her kids’ friends to be part of the family. Angie never met a stranger, and her zest for life was contagious. Her spunk, beautiful smile, kind words, and infectious laugh were known and loved by all who met her. She will truly be missed. Angie was born on April 20, 1933, in Agua Dulce, Texas. Angie attended local schools in Alice, TX. She came to Bakersfield at 18 to visit relatives and met Bob in a movie theater. During “Annie Get Your Gun,” their love affair of 64 years began. Bob and Angie wed on August 3, 1952, at St. Joseph’s in Bakersfield. Over the course of 15 years, the couple welcomed six children into the family. Angie was a career mom. She was the neighborhood mom that everyone loved. Throughout the generations of children that came through the Bucknell house, Angie was the central figure. As the Martin family matriarch, she conducted the home and all of our lives with grace, mercy, and unconditional love. Angie’s faith was a key part of her life and integral to her family. She was baptized on August 1, 1933, at SS Cyril & Methodius Parish in Cistern, Texas. In her youth, Angie was actively involved at local churches and was confirmed at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Alice, Texas, on November 10, 1941. Once in Bakersfield, Angie was involved at OLPH and St. Joseph’s, where she developed many wonderful lifelong friendships. Angie had a love for all people, whether it was a needy person on the street or giving to St. Vincent de Paul. She made sure her children were raised to know and love God, and lived her faith by example as a model of unconditional love, grace, and mercy. Angie worked at Pacific Bell as an operator until the family made a decision for her to become a stay-at-home mom. She often spoke of her career and the choice she made to “sacrifice” for the sake of family and raising kids. There are many “adopted” children that can testify, along with the family, that she made a great choice. Angie became very involved with various groups over the years, including TOPS, OLPH Women’s Guild, bowling, Faculty Wives at EBHS, school-based projects at Noble, Washington, and EBHS, and was always there cheering at any of the kids’ events or parties. She was a lifelong Cowboy fan and enjoyed every beating they gave Bob’s team, the 49ers. Angie never spoke badly of anyone and had the most welcoming spirit. She was loving, forgiving, and a great example of a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, aunt, and friend. She had an incredible sense of humor, quick wit, a beautiful smile, and always enjoyed a good dance, meal, or party. Through six children, the Martin home was the spot for many scheduled and unscheduled parties; and Angie was always there to host, cook, and love on people. There is so much to say about (great) grandma Angie, Mom, Angie the friend and our Texas Rose. We are thankful for the time we had with her and know that all who knew her were blessed as well. Angie will be remembered and celebrated as someone who loved life, loved God, and loved people. She had a zeal for family, friendships, and spending time with people. When you were with Angie, there was always laughter, wit, a compliment or two, words of good-living wisdom, and plenty of hugs. A visitation will be held on June 8th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for June 9th at 9:00 a.m. at OLPH, 124 Columbus St., Bakersfield. A Celebration of Life and burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park at 10:30 a.m. The family would like to thank the staff at KMC for their efforts and care and thank friends, near and far, for their support, thoughts, and prayer.
