Bio

TAYLOR, JOHN M S1 US NAVY WORLD WAR II DATE OF BIRTH: 04/28/1925 DATE OF DEATH: 04/07/2016 BURIED AT: SECTION 6B SITE 1323 ----------------------------------------------- Salem - John (Jack) Mervin Taylor, Jr., was born April 28, 1925, in Portland, Oregon, to John and Gladys (Atwood) Taylor. He passed away April 7, 2016. Jack graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942 and went into the Navy that year, serving during WWII in the South Pacific. He entered the V-12 program attending school at MIT, Boston, Mass. His folks were both from the east coast, and Jack had the opportunity to visit and live with his relatives near Boston and Cape Cod for a few years after mustering out of the service. Jack attended Babson and Tuft colleges. He thought he probably would be called for the Korean War, so returned to Portland, where he graduated from Lewis and Clark College. Jack married Stella Wallace September 2, 1948, and they moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he attended the University of Oregon on the GI Bill, and worked as a Graduate Assistant. His first job was with ALCOA. Jack worked in manufacturing metals, and in lumber most of his life. He managed lumber mills in Cottage Grove and Tillamook, Oregon. In 1973, he entered the real estate business. Thinking he would work a 40-hour week for the first time in his life, he and Stella moved to Salem in 1976, where he worked for the Oregon Department of Veterans. Jack wasn't satisfied in this work and again became employed in private work. After retirement in 1982, Jack and Stella purchased a motor home, and traveled to Alaska and other states for many years. Jack could create or fix almost anything, and upon retirement he joined a group of wood workers, called "The Termites". Ideas and tips were shared in this group, and Jack made many lovely pieces of furniture, and other wood items. The Taylors lived in Salemtowne for 25 years. In 2013, they moved to Capital Manor, where Stella still resides. Jack was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Eunice (Ted) Angel. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Stella; daughter, Ardele (Larry) Fleetwood; sons, Craig (Nancy) Taylor, and Mark (Fran) Taylor; granddaughter, Ashley (Carl) Orrell; and two great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held for Jack on April 30, 2016 at 1PM in the private dining room at Capital Manor, 1955 Dallas Hwy NW, Salem, Oregon. Published in the Salem, Oregon Statesman Journal on Apr. 24, 2016.
