Bio

"Carma F. Whitmore, 100 years, formerly of Fremont, Nebraska died Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Scribner, Nebraska. Carma was born May 3, 1916 on the family farm near Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska to Benjamin and Elizabeth (McCauley) Haxby. She grew up on the family farm. She and her younger brother Robert always had a great love for animals and had pets to care for. She attended school in Cedar Bluffs and was a 1934 graduate of Cedar Bluffs High School. Carma married the love of her life, Durward “Curley” Whitmore on November 25, 1937. They moved to Omaha where they had two daughters, Sharon Kay and Karen LaFaye. Carma worked for Omaha Public Schools in the cafeteria for several years. She retired to become a full time grandmother and caretaker for her husband. They moved to Fremont in 1972 and in 1974 Durward was diagnosed with kidney disease. Unable to drive himself, Carma learned to drive and received her license to be able to take him to dialysis in Omaha. After her husbands’ death in 1983, she started volunteering at the Senior Center where she was in charge of the kitchen. She received several awards of recognition for her volunteerism. She continued to volunteer until 2007. She moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Scribner on November 29, 2012. She became a fast favorite of the staff for her sweet attitude. She is survived by her son-in-law, Bob Ridge of Elkhorn, Nebraska; grandchildren Bobbie Willms and Kellee Ridge both of Omaha, Doug Huitt of Tarpon Springs, Florida, Sharyl Duncan and Deborah and husband, Douglas Day all of Fremont and four great grandchildren, Savannah Willms, Haley Huitt, Taylor Huitt, and Angelina Huitt.
