His Mother: Martha A. "Patsy" Jones Walker (1798-1830) Thanks to Contributor Travis Holt for submitting the following information: Broadfoot's 'Confederate Military History, Vol. XIV' states: Major J. W. Walker, commander of the camp of United Confederate Veterans at Stephens, Ark., was born in Alabama in 1827, but has lived from boyhood in Arkansas. He entered the Confederate service in August, 1861, with the Fifteenth regiment Arkansas infantry, was elected first lieutenant, and afterward was advanced to the ranks of captain and major. He served with the Fifteenth at Forts Henry and Donelson, Tenn., and after the surrender of these posts, on his return to duty, remained in the Trans-Mississippi department, fighting with the cavalry at Poison Spring, Marks' Mill, and other engagements of the Steele campaign, and in the many combats of Price's raid through Missouri. After the war he engaged in farming in Ouachita county.
