Wichita Eagle, Tuesday, September 3, 1957, Page 5A Death Ends Family Picnic Boy, 11, Drowns At Lake Afton A family Labor Day outing ended in the drowning of Edwin Gaede, 11, Monday afternoon at Lake Afton. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gaede, 1756 S. Glenn, and their seven children were having a picnic at the lake. Edwin, and his brother Arthur, 12, were given permission by their mother to go for a swim about 2 p.m. The two boys were holding hands a short distance from shore, according to Arthur. Then Edwin broke the clasp, put fingers to his nose, and said, "I'm going under for a minute." The boy only came up once, Arthur said, and then quickly disappeared. At Lake Bottom Roy Sumner and Gus Schullian, 4326 S. Handley, noticed Arthur shouting for help. Both men began diving for Edwin and recovered his body at the bottom of the lake. Dale McCoin, Lake Afton Superintendent, summoned an ambulance, but the boy was pronounced dead on arrival at County Hospital. The Gaede family has resided in Wichita for the past nine years. Gaede has been unemployed for the past five years because of a stomach cancer. Graveside services will be held at Newton, Kan. Culbertson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
