GOLETA, Calif. — Bessie R. Toogood, 97, of Goleta, Calif., died Monday, May 16, 2016, in Santa Barbara, Calif. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Toogood was born May 16, 1919, in Cotesfield to Anton and Bessie (Tuma) Svoboda. She was united in marriage to Ronald D. Toogood on Aug. 10, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo. The couple moved to Goleta, Calif., in 1962. Her husband died on Jan. 14, 1976. Bessie continued to live in her home in Goleta until May 3, 2016. Bessie was a photographer, manager, wife, homemaker and mother. She was an avid bowler and contributed 20 years as a volunteer at Goleta Valley Hospital and served as president of the Goleta Valley Historical Society. Survivors include a daughter, Terrie Toogood of Cotesfield; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Sally Toogood of Santa Maria, Calif.; a granddaughter, Penelope Toogood; and a brother, Eldon Svoboda of Elba. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ronald.
