Bio

Eula Mae Hill Roberts Eula Mae Hill Roberts What can you say about a woman who lived for a century, watched her two husbands and two sons be buried before her, and was the subject of a television sports story on her 94th birthday? You can say that her life is a testament to hard work and staying active. That she embodied strength, determination, and often times, stubbornness. That she was a fun-loving, caring, generous lady who endured hardship with dignity and grace. And most certainly, you can say that she loved well, was well loved, and that she will be greatly missed. Eula Mae Hill Roberts, of Austin, died peacefully December 5, 2002, in a Dripping Springs nursing home. She was 100 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alford Hill; husband, Mack "Black" Roberts; and sons, Cecil A. Hill and Hudson H. Hill. She is survived by her daughters- in-law, Maxine Hill and Patty Holloway, both of Austin; three grandchildren, Donna Shiller and husband, Don of Taylor, Alford Hill and wife, Carolyn of Round Mountain, and Valjoe Hill of Dripping Springs; cousin, Bebe Echols and husband, Sherman of Driftwood; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Born July 8, 1902, near Bee Cave to parents Lizzie and Ananias Hudson, Eula Mae married her first true love, Alford Hill, just prior to her sixteenth birthday. The couple had two beloved sons together. However, when Cecil was 12 and Hudson just 2, Eula Mae lost Alford to cancer. Left as a single mother, Eula Mae soon took a job at a cleaning and pressing shop in Austin, where she put to use sewing skills that would serve her throughout her life. A talented seamstress, she performed alterations for the public out of her home until the mid-1990s. In 1945, she married Black Roberts, a caring and hardworking man who loved Eula Mae and her family. The two spent more than thirty years together before he died. Eula Mae was devoted to her family, and one of her greatest joys was in giving to her loved ones at Christmas. Each year, she would line up her family by age, ask them if they'd been good the past year, and regardless of their answer, ``reward'' them with money earned from her sewing. In addition, she loved to have fun, whether it was by dancing and listening to ``good fiddle music,'' or by playing games like 42, dominoes, and bunko. In her sixties, Eula Mae took up a new hobby - bowling. She continued to bowl twice a week at Westgate Lanes until her mid-90s. On her 94th birthday, an Austin television station did a sports feature story on her, noting her active lifestyle, high bowling scores, and daily sewing work. When the reporter asked about her longevity, she jokingly replied that her secret was ``one Geritol a day.'' Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 9, 2002, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Oak Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
