Wilbur Gene Coleman, Lincoln, passed away on Thursday morning May 12, 2016. Gene passed away from heart failure, doing what he loved, chatting with the care givers at Tabitha Journey House. Gene was born in Jacksonville Florida, and grew up on a farm in Ulysses, Nebraska. He retired with 24 years of service to his country, seven in the U.S.M.C., seventeen in the Nebraska Air National Guard, and was a Vietnam War veteran. An imposing figure at 6'9” tall, with curly brown hair, and a ready smile, 'Big Gene' was an amiable man, always at ease to chat-up or help others. He endured a war, a motorcycle accident, a broken arm from falling off a rail car, by-pass surgery, 2 blood staph infections, numerous bouts of pneumonia, knee and hip replacements, West Nile Virus, and a stroke, usually with good spirits, and a wry sense of humor. Gene spent most of his career in sales. He loved the daily visits to nearby small towns, and the opportunity to converse with the locals. Never shy of hard work, he worked long hours at times, and on occasion, took his children with him to pass on his work ethic, and get a little extra work done. Gene is survived by: his wife, Betty; ten children, Richard, Susan, Denise, Daphne, Melissa, Martin, Michael, Melanie, Gene, and Terrance; twenty-three grand children; nine great-grand children; sisters, Margaret and Marie; brothers, Ray and Steve; and numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Wilbur and Olga Coleman; brother, Ron; and granddaughter, Justice. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Lincoln. Graveside services at Yankee Hill Cemetery in Lincoln. Obituary information from Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home.
