James "Jim" Marshall Snider, age 85, of Tulsa, formerly of McAlester, died Saturday, May 14, 2016 in Tulsa. Jim Snider was born on October 25, 1930 in Quinton to Emmitt Edward and Ethel Elizabeth (Hooks) Snider. Jim attended Ash Creek School through eighth grade and then moved off the farm and into town where he graduated from McAlester High School in 1949. On June 21, 1953 he married Joyce Kirkland, of McAlester. They were married for 62 years. While he played trombone in the high school band, he developed his love of music from his family. His mother played the organ in church where his father preached. In addition, both of his brothers played musical instruments and taught Jim to play the fiddle and guitar at the age of five. This early exposure to music made Jim determined to become a band director when he grew up. However, his pursuit of becoming a band director would temporarily be shelved. In 1952, during the Korean War, Jim was drafted into the United States Army where he would dutifully serve his country for two years. So, after he was honorably discharged in 1954, he enrolled in college and received an associate of arts degree in Music Education in 1956 from Eastern Oklahoma State Agricultural and Mechanical College and a bachelor of arts degree in Music Education in 1958 from Central State College. In 1958, he became band director in Jones. While teaching band at Jones Public Schools, he developed connections with several professional musicians that would serve as a conduit for launching the start of Jim's career as a professional musician. Jim's ear for music, coupled with his ability to play virtually any instrument, enabled him to do sessions with Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis, Ray Price, Smokey Robinson, Ray McKinley of the Glenn Miller Band, Fabian, Conway Twitty, and the Les Elgart Big Band. Not only did Jim have the opportunity to play with some major recording artists, he was the lead trombone player with The Al Good Orchestra for 13 years and the Royalaires Dance Band for 17 years. While playing professionally for nearly three decades, he taught band for 34 years. Jim taught at Jones Public Schools, Mid-Del Public Schools, Krebs School and Lakewood Christian School. His love of music and passion for teaching young musicians has resulted in Jim teaching thousands of students to play musical instruments. His musical legacy has enriched the lives of countless children. Yet, the most important gift that Jim left was his love that he showed his family. His love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchild is the greatest legacy he could leave. His love he showed his family was his greatest accomplishment. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Robert Sylvester Snider and Jack Alton Snider. Funeral services will be Friday, May 20, 2016, at 10:00 am at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lyle Marsellis officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester. Military honors will be provided by McAlester Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1098. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association.
