Bio
Shirley Jean Lawyer was born to Elmer and Helen (Hrdlicka) Lawyer . Shirley was grew up on the family farm in Charles Mix County, SD. She went to school in Ravinia, SD and was a 1945 graduate of Lake Andes High School. Shirley attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD and received her teaching certificate. She taught at Goose Lake Township country school. Shirley met Lealand E. Steele in 1944, while working at the Sam Steele residence as a house keeper. They were married August 27, 1945 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, SD. They farmed in Charles Mix County, until February of 1956 when they sold their farm and moved to Rapid City. They loaded the grain truck with their belongings and four children. They purchased a home and added another bedroom and family room and had two more children. Shirley was employed at Kresge’s, JC Penney’s, K-Mart andfor eighteen years at Rapid City Stevens High School Cafeteria, she retired in 1987. She liked to go hunting, camping, and fishing. Shirleys favorite hobby was crocheting fancy doilies Easter baskets and christening outfits for her grandchildren. She us survived by six children, 21 Grandchildren, 25 Great Grandchildren,and two Sisters Bernice. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Lealand, her parents, grandson Jamie Nelson.
