Bio

Thomas Standifer was born 27 March 1832 in Lee County, Virginia. His date and place of birth are given in his Civil War pension application. The only pre-1850 record located on Thomas is the 1849 Knox County, Kentucky tax list. Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Peavler, daughter of Lewis and Catharine (Head) Peavler, on 2 September 1849 in Knox County, Kentucky. Thomas was enumerated on the 1850 census in Pulaski County Kentucky living next-door to his mother Sarah (Sallie) Stanifer and Thomas' stepfather Archibald Parton. In 1851, Thomas and family settled in North Salem, Linn County, Missouri. They lived in North Salem until the Run of 1889 when Thomas filed on 160 acres southeast of Noble. In the early 1900s Thomas and Mary Elizabeth moved into a house in town where Thomas dealt in real estate and fine horses, while helping to fund the anti-saloon crusade and bringing Carrie Nation to Noble on 15 May 1905. After suffering a stroke in 1914, Thomas died peacefully at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Docia Stufflebean on 11 June 1917. Thomas and Mary Elizabeth were the proud parents of eleven daughters and one son, Archibald, named after Thomas' stepfather Archibald Parton. Archibald Standifer died in Linn County in 1878.
