Elizabeth M. "Betty" Sekul, 90, died on April 22, 2016 in Augusta, Georgia. Mrs. Sekul was born in Cisco, Texas. A long time resident of Mississippi, she moved to Augusta after losing her home in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She was a devoted wife and mother and civically-minded, volunteering at many levels. She was a registered nurse receiving her degree from Louisiana State University in 1948. She served many years as a nurse helping her husband establish a general clinic in Magee and later the first pediatric clinic in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1952. She then went back to school for a B.S. in social studies and secondary education from University of Southern Mississippi in 1977. She was an active member of Nativity BVM Parish. She was involved in many civic and cultural affairs, including Gulf Pines Girl Scouts Council, The Boy Scouts of America and the Walter Anderson Museum Board. She was a member of the Slavic Ladies Auxiliary, Beach Garden Society, Gulf Coast Opera Salon, Gulf Coast Carnival Association, Billikins, LeMasquee, and the Mississippi Medical Auxiliary. She served as President for Mary L. Michel PTA. She was a Master Gardener and Tristate Gardener Judge. She was Mother of the Year in 1977. She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin B. Montgomery; Eva Lee Horne Johnigan; her brother William Robert Montgomery; and her beloved husband Wallace Steve Sekul, M.D. She is survived by a son William Robert Sekul (Sherita) of Brandon Mississippi; a daughter Dr. Elizabeth A. Sekul (Jim James) of Augusta, Georgia; grandchildren William Steven Sekul, Griffin Sullivan Sekul, Braxton Wallace James and Elizabeth Diana James; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday April 30, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Nativity BVM Cathedral in Biloxi, MS. Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Internment to follow at Southern Memorial Park Cemetery. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Johnagin and Evelyn Montgomery Johnagin of Gilmer, Texas, at the Holy Name Catholic Church in Fort Worth, Texas. Miss Betsy Woods, formerly of Biloxi, and Victor Mavar of Biloxi were their attendants. Other Biloxians at the Sekul nuptial ceremony were: Miss Sue Filipich; Alec Kuljis; Mrs. Lucy Mavar; Olivia Mavar; Jennett Filipich; George Sekul; Lawrence Semski; and Mrs. And Mrs. Steve C. Sekul. Daily Herald, May 8, 1977, p.2, Mother of the Year Betty M. Sekul was chosen Biloxi’s Mother of the Year in May 1977 by Biloxi Lion’s Club. She had attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas and Centenary College at Shreveport, Louisiana and would receive her social studies and secondary education degree from USM in the late 1970s. When Betty married Dr. Sekul, she was a graduate nurse from the Tri State School of Nursing at Shreveport, Louisiana and had worked for the US Public Health Service in New Orleans at the Marine Hos-pital. Betty was a registered nurse and was active in cultural, civic, academic and social affairs. She was especially dedicated to the Boy and Girl Scout community on the Coast. Mrs. Sekul’s philosophy was: “What you are is God’s Gift to you; what you become is your Gift to God.
