Darlene Van Ostrand, 54, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003 at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala., following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Van Ostrand was born March 16, 1949 at Central City to Ervin and Vanda (Snodgrass) Zehr. Survivors of the immediate family include a son, Chad Von Ostrand of Grand Island; a daughter, Erin Van Ostrand of Grand Island; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nellie and Bob Bock of Central City and Carol and Chuma Wadibia of Mobile, Ala.; a brother and sister-in-law, LeRoy and Vicki Zehr of Palmer; and her mother, Vanda Zehr of Grand Island. Additional survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Van Ostrand received her education in Palmer and Central City. She graduated from Central City High School in 1967. She attended and graduated from the Grand Island School of Business. She married Charles Van Ostrand on May 24, 1980 in Central City. Mrs. Van Ostrand was employed as a case worker for 33 years at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Mrs. Van Ostrand enjoyed crocheting and making things for her family and friends. She was an avid Nebraska Football fan. She also had a deep love for children and she supported several of them through the Save the Children program. She was a member of Third City Christian Church.
