SHARES A HEADSTONE WITH SYLVIA KAY DAY MALISH (#16124555), HIS WIFE.
Eugene A. "Gene" Malish --Circled by family and enveloped in the love and prayers of many faithful friends, Gene Malish lost his earthly battle against a long illness on Saturday, October 7, 2006. Gene was born on December 15, 1927, in Rice's Crossing, Texas, and would have celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary with his wife, Kay in February. Even his difficult final moments were marked with his characteristic courage, dignity, and iron will to live. Throughout his 78 years, Gene Malish was known to many in countless different circumstances. Some knew him through his church service. Some knew him through his numerous years as a volunteer at Seton Medical Center and the Heart Hospital of Austin. Some knew him through his work at the Texas Highway Department, Materials & Test Division (now part of the Texas Department of Transportation.). Some knew him in his hometown of Taylor, Texas, as the caring son of the late Terry and Alex Malish. Some knew him as a butcher in Taylor at the Red and White Store, or the Allendale H.E. B. and Minimax grocery stores in Austin, or the bright smile at Old Hickory Barbeque. Some knew him as one who served as a medical corpsman at the end of World War II in the United States Navy and again in the Korean conflict assigned with the United States Marines Corps. Still others knew him as the fun-loving water skier who would even ski the cold waters of Lake Austin with his oldest, dearest friends on one 95 Christmas Day, given the chance. Regardless of how people knew him, they were each touched in the same way. Without fail, all would testify to his unselfish devotion to serving others. While his church family and his relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was a lifelong foundation, there was no greater love in his life than his family. As it was throughout his life, and especially in his final days, nothing gave him more joy than simply being at home with his wife, children and grandchildren. Gene Malish will be missed greatly. He will be remembered and cherished forever as a husband, father, grandfather and friend who would do whatever it took, great or small, to provide whatever was needed. Gene is survived by his wife Kay, and their two sons and one daughter. The children are Barbara and Eddie Malish of Austin, Michelle and Bobby Malish of Coppell, Texas, and Marsha and Robert Jones of Austin. He also loved his three wonderful grandchildren Mark, Emily, and Jackie Malish. Open visitation was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, from Noon to 7:00 p.m. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in the Taylor City Cemetery with, Pastor Kermit Bell, officiating. A Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at the Church of Glad Tidings, 2700 Northland Drive, Austin, Texas. [Based on an obituary published in the Austin American-Statesman on October 10, 2006.]
