Section 7, Lot 107, Space 1 - there is not a grave marker according to relatives alive at the time she was interned. Eliza Ann Schwarz was the daughter of John Jacob Schwarz and Jane Young (most likely- although this genealogy is sketchy) On March 23, 1882 she married Daniel W Smyth (1851 - 1898) in Franklin County, Ohio. She listed her name then as "Lizzie". October 15th, 1885 she gave birth to her first child, Robert Eliza Smyth, in New Bedford Massachusetts. Divorce records, nor subsequent marriage records have not been located. However, in US Census records from 1900 forward, she is listed as the wife of William Henry Sutton (1836 - 1916 Memorial ID Number: 83598167). Eliza and William had four children: William Andrew, Emma J, Albert John and Harry Caldicott Sutton. Following the death of William Henry, Eliza moved to Cleveland Ohio along with her children, who were some married, others married soon thereafter. She appears to have spent some time in the Harlem area of NYC perhaps enrolling her youngest son Harry Caldicott Sutton in the New York College there. He was a violinist. In 1922, Harry left the United States and went to study in Germany. He never returned from there, and is presumed to have died from a respiratory illness (Berlin abt. 1923). Her son Robert Eliza Smyth (sometimes went by Sutton) married Grace Merle Ervin. Her son, Robert's half-brother, William Andrew Sutton married Esther Marie Ervin. The two were sisters. The Erwins moved to Los Angeles, it seems about the time of the Great Depression. Photographs of Wm Andrew were taken there in 1929. About 1935, Eliza, along with her daughter Emma moved to Los Angeles to look after six of the minor children of William and Esther. Eliza 'falls through the cracks' of records as she is not recorded in either the 1935, or 1940 US Census. We do know of her being there because, as of this writing, one of the children of Wm and Esther is living and has related the information to us. They commented that she was 'strict Dutch-German'. Through their input, we have been able to track down Eliza's burial location and be able to place this memorial for her. California state records, and Cemetery records do show her as Elizabeth Sutton (not Eliza as we have all come to know her as) * Note: as of 2021, the locations of the burials of her sons Robert Eliza Smyth and that of Harry Caldecott Sutton are as of yet unknown
Elizabeth & William Sutton have no headstones. The pine cone was placed where the marker would have been.
