Bio

Mary Lucille Witherpoon Harkins was born June 30, 1924 in Roscoe Texas, to W.W.Witherspoon and Ethel. She was the third born to the family much later in life, and her father doted on her! She was given a pony at age 7 and it fell with her on his back breaking her leg. SHe never rode again. When she was a senior in High School she begged her parents to let her go to live with her big sister Bernez and her husband Gib so she could graduate from Sweetwater high school instead of small town Roscoe. They reluctantly let her but there is where she first saw her future husband Coleman Harkins Jr. She went on a blind date with him but did not care much for his quiet demeaner. Pearl Harbor was attacked and all the young men enlisted including Coleman. Mary, after graduating was hired by the railroad as a secretary and lived at home with parents paying them rent. Coleman, on R&R from the navy for two weeks, came to court Mary and love blossomed quickly and after a one week courtship they married in her parents front room. The honeymoon only lasted a week and her husband went back to war. She later was able to meet with him in New England for Officer's Candidate School. After WW II they lived in Houston, and raised three children: Donna Sue Harkins Fred, Nancy june Harkins and Patrick Coleman Harkins. She was a gifted writer and cartoonist, but never saw her work published, even though many urged her to persue such. She had many talents, and sewing her daughters clothes without a pattern was only one of them. She worked as an elementary school secretary for the Houston Public School system for 15 years, and at age 55 she and Coleman retired on Lake L.B.J. in Kingsland Texas. She was survived by Coleman, but passed away nine months after his death in 1997.
