Bio

- place of birth/death, first name, middle name, nickname, and parent link provided by Find A Grave contributor, Joe Spears (5/19/2023). ∼ JAMES ROBERT, "BOB" ONDRUSEK, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother & friend, of Combine, Texas, was born September 20, 1938 in Dallas, TX and passed away November 3, 2002 in Dallas, TX. He was Owner/Operator of Columbia Packing Company which was established in 1913, when Josef Ondrusek opened Columbia Meat Market and Sausage Factory near the downtown Dallas area. He chose the word "Columbia" as the name of his company because it represents "new beginnings". For the past nine decades the Ondruseks have been in the meat industry. The Czechoslovakian operation was built on family pride and tradition. Bob Ondrusek was and is a legend in SMA. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Bob has at least one story to tell. Bob's company, Columbia Packing Company in Dallas, TX has been in the Ondrusek family since 1913 and was a charter member when Southwest Meat Association was formed in 1957. His passion for the association was unsurpassed, and he made that fact abundantly clear to everyone with whom he came into contact. He was famous for "allegedly" requiring potential vendors to join SMA before he would even discuss business with them. Bob's industry colleagues recognized the value of his deeply-held love of the association by electing him to serve as its president twice, in 1981-82 and 1997-98. The SMA convention was one of his pet projects, and he was a perpetual member of the convention planning committee. He was an avid fundraiser for the SMA Foundation, and was recognized to The Southwest Meat Association Hall of Honor, (The SMA recognizes those for their selfless service and contributions of association leaders whose dedication, loyalty and hard work have paved the path to SMA's almost 50 years of success). That love of young people and their education was recognized and memorialized by Bob's industry friends with the creation of the Bob Ondrusek Scholarship fund within the SMA Foundation. The Ondrusek Fund provides tens of thousands of dollars each and every year to deserving students. Bob and his wife Alice were always active in Southwest Meat Association. Survived by wife; children; grandchildren; brother; sister; stepmother & numerous nieces, nephews & friends. Preceded in death by father, William Joseph Ondrusek, mother & step-father, Dorothy and Dick Lewis. Bob was a member of Seagoville Masonic Lodge No. 654, 32 Degree Mason Dallas Valley Scottish Rite, Hella Shine Temple of Dallas, State Fair Livestock Auction Committee, Kaufman County Jr. Livestock Association Board & Southwest Meat Association.
