Lucile R. Roberts passed away peacefully in her sleep Easter morning, 3/27/2016. She was born on Roberts Hill on November 3, 1920 to Steve and Orla English Roberts. She graduated from Marshall High School in 1937, finished two years at Mars Hill College and graduated from Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. in 1941. As a certified teacher of English and French, she accepted employment in at the Glen Alpine, N C. school system in 1941, teaching there until the school term ended in 1943. Lucile then worked as a part-time librarian and assistant editor of "The Echo" for Ecusta Paper Corporation, a Pisgah Forest, North Carolina corporation, until her marriage in 1944. Lucile was married on May 13, 1944, to Navy Lt. Clyde M. Roberts, a fellow Madison County native, at her home on Roberts Hill, Marshall, NC. This loving marriage was to last over 56 years and the couple, "Clyde and Lucile" were well known in Marshall and Madison County. They had four children: Cecelia Roberts Ward of Marshall; Margot S. Roberts of Jonesboro, Ga.; Clyde Morris Roberts, Jr., of New York City, NY; and Frank S. Roberts of Asheville, NC. She had two sons-in-law: Frank Ward of Marshall, NC and Dunham McAllister of Jonesboro, Ga. Her Grandchildren are Kristen Roberts Ward Donaldson, of McLeansville, NC; Spencer English Ward of Madison, Alabama; Julia McAllister Stafford of Macon, Ga.; Blaine McAllister West of Moncks Corner, SC; and Anna Roberts of New York City, NY. Four Great-grandchildren arrived during her lifetime: Baxley West of Moncks Corner, SC; Weston Ward of Madison, Al; Lillian Donaldson of McLeansville, NC; and McAllister Stafford of Macon, Ga. Lucile was a member of the Methodist Church of Marshall and also regularly attended the First Baptist Church of Marshall, where Clyde was a member. She served as a librarian for the Madison County Public Library system until her retirement, and was honored at Madison County Public Library's celebration of their Fifty-Fifth Anniversary as being of the four "Original Librarians of Madison County Public Library". She was active in many local organizations, among which were the Marshall Ladies Book Club (one of the oldest clubs in Western North Carolina, having been organized in 1938), PTA, Marshall Garden Club, Madison County Historical Society, and Marshall Bridge Club. On June 9, 1964, Lucile received a certificate of appreciation from the "Girl Scouts of the United States of America" for her interest and support off Girl Scouting, the certificate stating "Mrs. Clyde Roberts: Seven years as the Neighborhood Chairman without which the Madison County Neighborhood would have been at a loss to have had Girl Scouting. Her friends in Madison County give with this their grateful thanks and continued support". Lucile Roberts is survived by all four of her children, her two sons-in-law; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She lost her loving husband, Clyde in 2001. A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Marshall First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Roberts Family Cemetery. Source Citation: Madison Funeral Home
