Bio

DAVENPORT — Naomi Maxine “Ma” (Duree) Sly, 82, peacefully made her way home on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at Crest Health Center in Davenport, surrounded by her family –- something she has been asking to do for some time. We are sure she was greeted at the Gate with much joy. For, if ever there was a woman who had earned her wings on this earth, it was our mom. We were so very blessed to be raised in a home where there was always a smile to greet you, an ear to listen, an open heart and an extra place at the table for anyone. She was never judgmental and, if we ever disappointed her, she never let on. Always quick with a comeback, she called them like she saw them, but never with malice. Mom referred to all of our friends as her adopted children, and they were always welcomed and treated as her own. Although her passing leaves us brokenhearted, we are comforted by the knowledge that she is home at last. Thank you, mom! We love you! Funeral services to celebrate her life will be 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016, in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., downtown Davenport. Visitation will be Friday, March 18, 2016, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Naomi Maxine Duree was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Woodburn, Iowa, the daughter of Harry A. and Rebecka (Vertz) Duree. She was united in marriage to James C. “Old Dog” Sly on June 19, 1954, in Maysville, Iowa. He preceded her in death March 28, 2012. In lieu of memorials, the family asks that you give your family and friends a hug, tell them you love them and make someone smile. Mom would like that. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Greg (Cheryl) Sly, Bettendorf, Linda (DJ) Carlson, Blue Grass, Rosanne (Scott) Ginther, Davenport and Linda (Roger) Adams, Davenport; grandchildren, Nick Sly, Scott Sly, Betsy Ginther and KateLyn Adams; many nieces, nephews, all of her “adopted” children and a host of great friends. In addition to her husband James, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leo “Whimpy” (Erma) Duree, Ralph “Toad” (Marion) Duree and Loren “Joe” (Ann) Duree; sisters, Margaret Laurene “Sugar” (Warren) Smith, Wylla “Billie” (Dale) Burgess and Betty “Polka Dot” (Darrel) Swan and Theresa “Trek” (Junior) Patterson. May they rest in peace. Ni’s family would like to thank the staff of Ridgecrest/Crest Health Center for the amazing and compassionate care she received. We will be forever grateful for your love, humor, good attitudes and willingness to go the extra mile. You all made such a difference in Ma’s and our lives, and your kindness will never be forgotten.
