Merle Fitzgerald was my great grandmother. Since she was our grandma's mother, we called her Gramma-mother. I remember she had the prettiest things in her room at my grandma's house. She had these lamps with frilly shades and pink glass on the lamp. She had a little figurine of a lady's head on her dresser, with pearl earrings and necklace and solid black eyelashes that fascinated me. (They were made by Napco and called headvases). She also had Butterfinger candy bars hidden in the top shelf of her closet, which she would occasionally share with a lucky great-grandchild. Grandma-mother made beautiful quilts and crocheted afghans and potholders. I am lucky to still have some of these. I have a quilt that she made from pieces of my mother's and aunt's dresses when they were young, and I still use some of her potholders today. I think it would make her happy to know that the things she made are still used and appreciated.
