ORD — Marlene M. Smith, 82, of Ord passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Josh Brown and Father Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Marlene was born July 22, 1933, at Ord to Ralph and Francis (Drozda) Norman. She was raised in Ord and graduated from Ord High School in 1951. Marlene continued her education at Kearney State Teacher’s College, where she received a teaching certificate and later taught school in Elyria. She lived in Lincoln and worked at the Capitol in the State Auditor’s Office and also was a model for Miller and Paine Department Store. While in Lincoln, Marlene met the love of her life, Walter Smith. Marlene became Walt’s bride on Nov. 12, 1956, at Ord. For a short time they lived in Philadelphia and Colorado Springs before settling in Ord. Walt and Marlene raised their family of 10 children in Ord. Marlene was a homemaker and also worked for her father in the County Attorney’s Office, at Severson’s Accounting and enjoyed being a waitress at the Vets’ Club. She was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Altar Society; and enjoyed helping at the events at St. Mary’s. Marlene had a passion for music; she was the church organist and also sang. She enjoyed opera and classical music, especially Barry Manilow and Mario Lanza. She loved watching baseball, especially the Phillies and Royals, and was an avid Pete Rose fan. Marlene belonged to a card club, Douthit’s coffee group and also spent time with crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, home projects and watching “Little House on the Prairie.” Survivors include her loving husband of 59 years, Walter of Ord; her beloved three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Patty of Loveland, Colo., John of Ord and Tom and Paula of Lincoln; and her beloved seven daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Greg Spurck of Omaha, Peg Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Cathy and Steve Coble of Basset, Anne and Dean Echtinaw of Omaha, Sue and Jerry Laughlin of South Bend, Patty and Don Schaaf and Chris and George Simmerman, all of Omaha. She was the proud grandmother of 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Virginia Norman-Setlik of Ord, and two brothers-in-law, Thomas McCarthy of Norfolk and Dave Boutot of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-granddaughter, Alexandria “Bean” Huber; two brothers, Roland and Lyle Norman; and two sisters, Doris McCarthy and Sondra Buller.
