Bio

Born February 2, 1926, Joan passed away into eternal rest at the age of 90 on February 24, 2016 at her home where she lived for the past twenty years with her eldest daughter Cathie and son-in-law John. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Camille Lewis, husband A. J. Grothues, and sister Theresa Taylor. With strength and faith, Joan accepted the loss of four grandchildren and three great grandchildren with whom she is now reunited. She is survived by her six children and their families: A.J. (Tony) Grothues and wife Nancy; Cathie Clark and husband John; Patti Menn and husband Kenneth; Susie Kotara and husband Sam of Karnes City; Robert Lewis Grothues and wife Frances; Ginger Gober and husband Alan of Austin; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Joan enjoyed a full and varied life. Her six children will remember that, as busy as her life was, she remained calm. She put into practice the maxim so popular today "Keep Calm and Carry On." She spent thirty years working in civil service at Kelly Air Force Base in Materials Management, retiring in 1986 having achieved a GS13 rating. During her years at Kelly, she also pursued her Bachelor's Degree at the Weekend College offered at Our Lady of the Lake University. She then joined her husband A.J. Grothues in expanding the art supply and framing business that they both created in 1969. She wore several hats in the business, but her primary focus was bookkeeping for Art Incorporated. Over the years, she and A.J. opened several locations to meet the needs of their clients. Joan remained active in the business until 2006. Art Incorporated's legacy continues under the watchful eye of three of their children Robert, Patti, and Cathie. Funeral Mass, March 4, 2016 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, interment followed.
