Capt. Gannaway was the head of the DPD Special Services Bureau, as well as being a member of the 488th Military Intelligence Detachment - a private spy agency in Dallas, started by Col. Jack Crichton, which operated out of a state of the art communications bunker at the State Fairgrounds. Half of the 488th's ~100 members were also DPD CIS detectives. The Special Services Bureau included the Criminal Intelligence Section (CIS) and the Narcotics Bureau and also had its offices in the Fairgrounds near the 488th's bunker. Capt. Gannaway was one of the lead Detectives during the investigation of the assassination of President Kennedy and he, along with 2 other CIS & 488th members, Dep. Chief George L. Lumpkin and Det. L.D. Stringfellow pointed to Oswald as the assassin very early on. The Dallas Morning News - 06/07/2000 GANNAWAY W.P. ''PAT'' age 84, died unexpectedly Sunday June 4, 2000. He was born in Whitney, Texas on February 3, 1916. Pat was a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church. Pat graduated from Whitney High School and later attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He moved to Dallas, Texas where he was a city police officer until he entered the Army through the Selective Service in September, 1942. He was commissioned a second lieutenant at the Army Engineer Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia on July 7, 1943 and assigned to the 328th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 103rd Infantry Division, Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. He went overseas with this division as a platoon leader of 3rd Plt, Company A, 328th Engineer Combat Battalion. While with this division he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and one Oak Leak Cluster for his contribution to the successful completion of the division's mission as reflected in general orders 44 and 142, 103rd Infantry Division, 1945. After the 103rd Division captured Innsbruck, Austria he was transferred to the 45th Infantry Division and designated company commander of Company A, 120th Engineer Combat Battalion. When the 45th Division was demobilized he was placed on inactive status as a captain CE-AUS. He returned to the Dallas Police Department but continued his military training in the USAR. He transferred to the Army Intelligence Service and retired as a lieutenant colonel Al-USAR on February 3, 1976. He also retired from the Dallas Police Department with the rank of Director in July 1971. After retirement he moved to Austin, Texas and became Coordinator Against Organized Crime for the Criminal Justice Department. He served in this position until he retired in 1978. He was preceded in death by Betty Gannaway in 1977 and by his daughter, Lynne Gannaway in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Gannaway of Austin; daughter, Patsy Celman and husband, Vic of Houston; son, Billy Gannaway and wife, Carolyn of Cedar Park; Linda Dooley of Bryan, Texas; grandchildren, Stephanie Hart and husband Justin of Highland Park, New Jersey, Melissa Patsley of Austin. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 from 6:00 p.m. to - 8:00p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar. Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 8, 2000 in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, with Reverend Paul Stephens officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks.
