Alvin R. Cahoy, 84, formerly of Moorhead, MN, died Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Twin Valley Living Center in Twin Valley, MN. Al was born at his grandparent’s homestead on March 12, 1931, near Fairfax, SD. He was the only child of William and Agnes (Pacl) Cahoy. After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1948, Al attended the University of South Dakota-Vermillion for two years, followed by one summer session at Southern State Teacher’s College in Springfield, SD. His first job was teaching 7th and 8th grade and coaching basketball in Colman, SD, where he met the love of his life, Theresa Bott. He and Theresa were married on October 17, 1951. Al took a job with Dakon in 1957, entering a career selling farm equipment that would extend for more than 40 years. In 1960, they moved from South Dakota to the Fargo/Moorhead area and have lived there ever since. Al was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and a member of the Moorhead Knights of Columbus #4463, where he was a past Grand Knight and past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights. He and his wife were active volunteers in the parish. Al was intelligent, friendly and upbeat, always ready with a smile and a helping hand. He was an avid sports fan, rarely missing a Spuds basketball or football game, and he also enjoyed woodworking, cooking, history and travelling. Al is survived by his wife of 64 years, Theresa; his four children, William (Jennifer) of Cold Spring, MN, Greg (Kari) of Fargo, ND, Lisa (Dennis) Ouderkirk of Fargo, and Lori (Tom) Laney of New Rockford, ND; eight grandchildren, David Cahoy, Paul Cahoy, Anna (Ryan) McKay, Danielle (Jayme) Bochman, Kelly Cahoy, Allison Cahoy, Caleb Laney and Ethan Laney; two great-grandchildren, Abigail Bochman and Mason McKay; sisters-in-law, Patricia Dvoracek and Rosemary Vogt; brothers-in-law, Floyd Heinemann, Donnley Dvoracek, and Bill Vogt; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 218 10th St. So., Moorhead, on Monday, February 22, 2016, from 4 PM to 6:30 PM, with rosary at 5 PM, and prayer service at 6:30 PM. The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM, on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Moorhead. The family would like to thank Twin Valley Living Center, Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen, MN, Evergreens of Moorhead, and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their wonderful care over the past months.
