John J. Galka, Jr., beloved husband and father, passed away on Oct. 25 at the age of 83, while at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospice Center after a long battle with kidney failure. He was born on May 29, 1924, in Leavenworth, Kan., to John J. Galka Sr. and Josephine Swanek. As a young adult, he lived in Ord and Grand Island, Neb. While living in Nebraska, he enjoyed playing in Polka bands and was proud of his Polish heritage. He served in the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Military Order of the Cooties. John moved to Cheyenne in 1955 where he worked as a pharmacist at Bunten Pharmacy and at Roedel's Drug. In 1967, he became employed with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. John was a family man and found joy in always being with his wife and son. He served as a scoutmaster, choir director, and bowling secretary. He was employed as the fiscal officer with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, which he retired from July 1, 1987. His hobbies included arts, oil painting, watercolors, bowling, gardening and fishing. John had a passion for cooking and spent hours collecting recipes. He was always looking for ways to enhance a recipe dish, eager to try something new and enjoyed watching cooking shows on television. John was also a licensed amateur "ham" radio operator. His call sign was KC7PFN. He enjoyed the hobby with his son, especially listening to the over-the-air contacts in foreign countries that his son made. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, ShyWy Amateur Radio Club and various bowling leagues. He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Cheyenne; son, Greg and his wife, Mindy of Cheyenne; stepchildren, Dan Bales of Florida, Suzanne Dawson of Cheyenne, and Dr. Phil Bales of Oregon; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Galka Sr., and his parents John and Josephine Galka. © Wyoming Tribune Eagle October 29, 2007
