Dick Long, Former Stage Coach Driver Services Monday A stage coach driver of the picturesque west of 1890's, who saw his job vanish with the coming of the rails, was laid to rest here Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Hastings-Pearson chapel at 2 Monday afternoon, for Richard Leander Long, who died at the Ord hospital Sept. 18, 1958 at the age of 81 years, two months and 13 days. Interment was in the Ord Cemetery. Richard Leander, eldest son of Katherine and David Long, was born July 5, 1877 at Scribner, Nebr. In his youth he spent considerable time working at various jobs in the old west and southwest. He drove the stage coach between Pennablanca and Hachita, New Mexico. When that job terminated he found employment in the Pueblo, Colorado brick yards. It was while working here that he met and married Merriam Agnes Bray on Oct. 15, 1903. The couple had eight children, all of whom grew to adulthood. The Longs spent the early years of their married life on the Horseshoe Ranch near Dawson, New Mexico. In 1910 they moved their family to a farm near Webster, Kans., and in 1916 they moved again to Palco, Kans. They lived here until in 1934 when they moved to their final home in Ord, where Mr. Long was engaged in hauling and trucking for farmers and neighbors, working with the Ord Livestock until five years ago. He was a lover of animals and enjoyed his work He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Alma Hopkins, one son, David Lee, his father, mother, five sisters and two brothers. Surviving him are his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Grace Acheson, Wakenney, Kans., Mrs. Dolores Tonack, Napa, Calif., Mrs. Elda Anderson, Ord, Mrs. Maxine Bailey, Santa Marie, Calif.; two sons, Donald of Ord and Richard of Eugene, Ore. Other survivors are three brothers, Porter of Stapleton, Nebr., Joe and Mause of Washington state; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The Ord Quiz - Thur, Sep 25 1958, Pg 8, Col 1
