Carl Raymond Clark was born Stephen Elmer Crider, son of James Marshall Crider and Martha Evelyn Patton. He was born, grew up, and spent his early adulthood in Collin County, Texas. There are two variations of the story of why Steve Crider changed his name. One is that he witnessed a murder, when two men (supposedly Native Americans) killed a third, and he was spotted watching them; he then fled to California and changed his name to Carl Clark so that the murderers couldn't find him. The other story is that while his first wife was on her death bed, a man was outside making a commotion, and Steve killed him; he then changed his name and moved to California to avoid prosecution. Either way, there is ample evidence proving these two men were the same person. For one, Stephen Crider and Carl Clark had the name birthday: May 18th. He was born in 1890 (as proven by his twin brother's headstone, and his World War I draft registration), though his Social Security application gives the year 1891. His mother's and sister Lillie's obituaries still refer to him as S. E. or Steve Crider, with residence in California, and the locations given in those obituaries (Redwood and San Francisco, respectively) correspond with the residences of Carl Clark. Further, Clark's obituary names a surviving son, Loma Crider, who is proven by the 1920 Census to be the son of Stephen Crider. The obituary also says he is survived by two half-sisters, which would be Nellie and Sarah Skipper, both still living in 1975. Finally, DNA testing between grandchildren of Lillie Cowan and Carl Clark prove a 2nd cousin relationship, and a DNA test comparison between a child of Carl Clark's son and a grandchild of Stephen Crider's daughter proves an extremely close familial relationship. Clark was known around Redwood, CA and San Carlos, CA for picketing the Disney Cedar Supply Company of San Carlos every single working day (Monday through Friday) for a year and a half, rain or shine. After retiring as a carpenter, he became a professional picketer at a rate of $25/day. He was well-known locally for his friendly waving at the hundreds of passing commuters each day.
