Though he was indeed a man of few words, Louis Kapchinski’s life of hard work and loving provision for his family was evidence enough of his tender feelings for those closest to him. He passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016 at age 80. Louis was born on April 1, 1935, in College Station, to Felix Sylvester Kapchinski and Hattie Francis Busa; he was raised on their family farm along with his four siblings: Henry Sam Kapchinski, Christine Victoria Sechelski, Anne Marie Fojtik and Helen Francis Matous. (All of Louis’s immediate family members predeceased him.) Louis began laboring on a neighbor’s farm at age ten; by seventeen, Louis had taken a job with International Furniture and would stay with the company until he was 30. At one point, he served in the National Guard and perfected the art of burning pineapple cobbler. Eventually, Louis decided to branch out into business for himself, owning and operating Kapchinski Upholstery for 37 years. Although necessity had demanded that Louis leave A&M Consolidated High School before graduation, his strong work ethic and ambitious goals of running his own business ultimately ensured his success. He didn’t care much for traveling, but Louis loved to spend his time off with those family members and friends whose company he treasured. He met Bib Hancock while she was working as a soda jerk in Navasota, and she made such an impression on him that he kept returning to see her. In 1957, they were married in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Navasota, and their union has lasted 59 years, with Bib now surviving Louis. Together, they had three children: Karl (and wife Anita Kapchinski) and Becky (and husband Keith Wade)—all of College Station—and another daughter, Peggy (deceased in 1984). Louis also loved interacting with his grandchildren, who knew his love for the outdoors and pranks; they include Kris, Kyle and Kevin Kapchinski, as well as Nathan and Carla Wade. Louis was also great-grandfather of seven lively blessings. As his family grew, his children and grandchildren knew that when they needed Louis, he could usually be found in his shop working on his tractor, taking care of his cows, deer hunting (even smoking his own venison) or fishing on the river. On Sundays, they could find him at St. Joseph Catholic Church, faithfully serving the God that He loved. Visitation for Louis Kapchinski will be held from 5:30-6:30 on Thursday, February 4, 2016, with the Rosary recited at 6:30 in Hillier Funeral Home’s College Station Chapel. A Mass of Celebration will be at 10am on Friday, February 5, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. John McCaffrey officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
