Richard Atherton officiated at funeral services Monday afternoon at the Ord Methodist Church for Verlon Wendell Barnes. He died Thursday at Ord Hospital after a lingering illness. He was 28. The Mira Valley quartet sang accompanied by Mrs. Mildred Lenz. Mrs. Viola Kellison played the prelude and postlude. Pallbearers were: Max Stabb, William Goldfish, Tom Blanchard, Don Wagner, Art John, Lee Nielsen. Honorary bearers were: Harlan Gydesen, Harlan Green, Phil Quinn, Otto Zapp, Rodney Key, Harry Kramer, Lloyd Geweke, Robert Heiselman. Burial was in Ord City Cemetery with Hastings-Pearson in charge of arrangements. Verlon was born March 28, 1934, at Scotia to George and Zena Barnes. He received early education at Fish Creek Grade School near Scotia and was graduated from Scotia High School in 1951. He married Rita Sevenker May 24, 1955, and they lived on a farm near Ord. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. Survivors are: his wife; three sons, Marty Alan, Verlon Wayne, Russell Jon; Two daughters, Debra and Roxanne; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Barnes of Scotia; brothers, Louis of Greeley, Virgil of Scotia and George Jr. of Ord; sisters, Mrs. Geneva Edghill and Mrs. Donna Voyek of Ord, Mrs. Lorna Winters of Scotia, Mrs. Delores Thompson and Mrs. Mildred Otto of North Loup.
