Leroy Carlson, age 85, of Buda, Texas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 16, 2007 with his family by his side. Leroy, who was proud to be a full-blooded Swede, was born in Elroy, Texas on July 22, 1922 to Gustav "Pop" and Ruth Carlson. Ruth died young and Leroy and his three siblings helped Pop in the fields at an early age. Life was tough but Leroy was tougher. He was a big man, not only in size and strength, but in heart and spirit. He married Janette Callan of Austin in 1949, after earnestly pursuing her for three short months. He was the successful owner of Leroy Carlson's Auto Glass and Trim from 1947 until his retirement in 1983. It is rare to find someone who lived in South Austin from the 1940's through the 1980's who didn't know and respect Leroy. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, bowler, domino player and rarely missed the opportunity to attend a softball or baseball game if a grandchild was playing. The only thing Leroy didn't do well was drive. Even great-grandchildren knew to scatter if "G-Pa" got behind the wheel of his golf cart. He was a regular at Austin Saengerrunde, where he bowled for many years, and at the Manchaca Fire Hall, where he played a mean game of "moon" on Friday nights. He cherished his friendships, which were innumerable. He is survived by his loving wife, Janette; and his four adoring children and their spouses, Mike Carlson and his wife, Carla, Diana Pannell and her husband, Guy, Larry Carlson and his wife, Lou Ann and Lisa Goll and her husband, David. Perhaps Leroy's greatest legacy lives on in his grandchildren who doted on him. They are, Christi Dault, Kelly Gonzales, Lindsay Brooks, Cullen Carlson, Tyler Carlson, Heather Goll, Kendall Carlson and Kasey Goll. Leroy was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren and one due in September. He is also survived by his sister, Ethel Myers and brother, Leonard Carlson. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Cook-Walden/ Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon Drive. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Joel Thielepape officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park Cemetery. Honoring Leroy as pallbearers will be David Goll, Cullen Carlson, Tyler Carlson, Donnie Dault, Ross Brooks, Casey Gonzales, Dewayne Goll and John Cravatt. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Vogel, Guy Pannell, Nelson Johnson, John Black, Leo Schwartz, and Joe McAllister. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Leroy's honor to the Ronald McDonald House or St. Jude's Hospital.
