Bio

Fern Lucille (Walton) Harding, 92, passed away Jan. 21, 2016, at Linden Court in North Platte. Fern was born on July 11, 1923, in rural Knox County to Jesse and Ruth Walton. She grew up and attended school in Pierce, graduating from Pierce High School in 1941. On July 15, 1942, she married Norris Harding and they made their home in Norfolk, where Norris worked as a commercial bus driver. In 1943, they welcomed their son, Leonard, followed by their daughter, Beverly, in 1946. In 1952, the family moved to North Platte, where Fern worked at the O’Connor Drug Store until they moved to Arnold in 1959, where she worked for Harbert’s Bakery and the Gamble Store. In 1972, they moved to Omaha, where they resided until 1989, making their final move back to Arnold to retire and enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. Fern enjoyed working with Norris in their retirement. They could be found most days repairing and upholstering furniture and working on small engines. After the passing of her husband, Norris, she spent countless hours crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was always hard at work, whether it be gathering and splitting walnuts, picking apples to can or sewing sequins on calendars to be handed out for Christmas gifts or to friends and neighbors. Fern took great pride in having a clean home and yard. She could be found mowing her yard every five days without fail. Fern spent her final years at Linden Court in North Platte. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Ruth Walton; brother, Harold Walton; nephew, Ricky Walton; father- and mother-in-law, Clyde and Hazelle Harding; brothers-in-law, Newell and Gene Harding; and her husband, Norris. She is survived by her son, Leonard (Paula) Harding, of North Platte, daughter, Beverly (Doug) Engleman, of Arnold; eight grandchildren, Jeff, Richard and Dustin Harding, Amy Owen, Shannon Staggs and Mark, Darrin and Todd Engleman; 18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lorraine Walton; nephews, Jim and Randy Walton; nieces, Sandra Korth and Diane Kesting; and other family and friends. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the United Methodist Church in Arnold with burial to follow at 3:30 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery in Madison. Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
