Bio

Born in Upshur County on March 25, 1845, Mary and her twin sister, Martha Adeline, were the daughters of Edmund J and Emaline (Merrell) Smith. Their brother, George Washington Smith preceded them, being born in 1843. In 1847, their father died. Their mother, Emaline remarried in 1850 to Thomas P Garrett. Mary Angeline married Henry Vines in about 1868, followed by the birth of their daughter, Mary Etta, in August 1869. After Henry died, Mary Angeline remarried in 1872 to David Flanagan (1804-1882), originally from South Carolina. David and Mary had four children: Mindia Catherine 'Mindy' in 1872; Drury David 'Drue' in 1876; Columbus C in 1878; and, Laura Eugenie in 1881. David died in 1882. Their son Columbus died before 1900. After her other four children became adults, Mary lived with one or another of them until her death. Except for Drue, all of her children preceded her in death.
