Son of Samuel B Hayes, II and Eleanor Amsberry, Nathan Samuel Hayes - my 2nd great grandfather - was born in Mason County, VA in what is modern day Mason County, WV, on 22 Mar 1836. When Nathan Samuel Hayes was born, there was no state of WV, which would become the 35th state in the union on 20 Jun 1863. He was the husband of Amanda F Whaley born in Morgan County, Ohio. They were married on 11 June 1857 in Marion County, Iowa. Nathan Samuel Hayes served in Company G, 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Corporal on 25 Nov 1861 at the age of 25. He was wounded slightly in the head at Shiloh, Tennessee on 6 April 1862. He was promoted to Full Private on 23 Jun 1863. He mustered out on 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. He and Amanda had 6 children together: Arista Valdeva (born 15 Apr 1858 in Clay, Marion County, IA); John Samuel (born 24 Jan 1860 and died 1 Sep 1861, both in Clay, Marion County, IA); Henry Frank (born 6 Nov 1866 in Knoxville, Marion County, IA); Ernest Warren (born 20 Dec 1869 in Knoxville, Marion County, IA); Lillie Amanda - my great grandmother (born 8 Apr 1875 in Knoxville, Marion County, IA) and James Clarence (born 26 Nov 1877 in Barton County, KS). ∼ Aged 76 years Company G 15th Regiment Iowa Vol Infantry ======================== U.S. Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865 Name: Nathan S.
