John disappeared on Sunday night, September 17, 1905. He was in Tupelo that afternoon and seen riding a mule toward home that evening. His body was found on Thursday morning, buried in a ditch about a quarter mile from his house, near Bissell, four miles west of Tupelo. His hand was sticking out of the ground, having been uncovered by a heavy rain. John had been hit in the head with a blunt object. It appeared that he had been murdered in his bed because he was wearing only his underclothes, and buried with his undershirt pulled up over his head. His clothing, a blanket and a pillow covered with blood were found buried under a log a few hundred yards from his body. John was described as a quiet, inoffensive man, who had many friends, but was known to enjoy a drink. John’s wife Lula and their 16 year old son Claude were charged with murder. After a preliminary hearing, Lula was held to await the action of a grand jury, but Claude was released from custody due to insufficient evidence. According to newspaper accounts, Lula did not appear nervous or uneasy, and her general deportment did not betray any guilt or knowledge of the murder. On October 15, she was granted bail and released after posting a $1000 bond. The outcome of the trial is unknown, since no other newspaper articles or court records were found, and John and Lula's second oldest son Noah Victor would never discuss the matter.
