Mass of Christian Burial for Emma Gehlsen, age 95, of Lynch, Nebraska are will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 7, 2015, at Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lynch. Father Doug Scheinost will be Celebrant, with burial in Assumption Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Cemetery in Lynch. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church, with a 7:00 p.m. Wake Service. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements. Emma died Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at Niobrara Valley Hospital in Lynch after a brief battle with cancer. Emma Gehlsen, daughter of Albert and Tonie (Maly) Tejral, was born November 3, 1920, at Spencer, Nebraska. Emma was the oldest of three children. She was raised on a farm near Spencer and attended a country grade school near Spencer and high school in Bristow. After high school, Emma did house cleaning, ironing, and cooking for different people in the area. She worked at the Woidneck Hotel and Hennan Hospital in Spencer. Emma also lived with her relatives, the Vlcans, near Monowi and took care of them. While in Monowi, Emma would meet up with friends at the Monowi Café and wave at the train engineer and passengers as the train went by. She loved to go dancing and would go every Saturday night with friends. Emma married Jacob Gehlsen on February 17, 1947, at the Spencer Parish House by Father Condon. They farmed in the Gross area for 27 years until they moved to Lynch in 1974. After the move to town, Emma worked at Niobrara Valley Hospital in the dietary department for 20 years. She loved to dance, play cards, embroider, and visit with friends and family. She was a member of Gross Women’s Club and the Lynch Card Clubs. Survivors include her children, James (Dawn) Gehlsen of Bristow, Nebraska, Garland Gehlsen of Lynch, Nebraska, Retha (Lawrence) Marx of O’Neill, Nebraska, and Jack (Janet) Gehlsen of Crofton, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Adam (Michaela) Marx of Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Mary (Dave) Dougherty of Plainview, Nebraska, Monica (Elpidio) Buhian of Elk Point, South Dakota, and Lisa (John) Sobotka of Tyndall, South Dakota; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Birger of Yankton, South Dakota. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jake; and brother, Emil Tejral.
