Raymond Warren Ward, 76, of Oscoda, Mich., died unexpectedly on Aug. 23, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw of acute leukemia. Funeral arrangements are being handled by W.L. Case and Company Funeral Home of Saginaw. A military service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. The Rev. Robert Muirhead will officiate. Raymond was born June 14, 1930, in St. Joseph, to J. Raymond and Isabelle Smith Ward . During his childhood he was active in the Boy Scouts and church activities and spent much of his time enjoying his lifelong passions for hunting and fishing. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1948. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and was a 31-year veteran. He saw duty in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and throughout his Air Force career was stationed at bases in Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Alaska and Japan. On Nov. 1, 1956, in Japan, Raymond married the love of his life, Ikuko Hashiba , of Suginami-Ku, Japan, who survives him. After his last tour at Wurtsmith Air Force base, he and his wife retired in Oscoda, Mich. There they enjoyed family, friends, their love for gardening, and taking time out to travel throughout the world. To this loving marriage were born children R. Edward Ward of Silva, Wash., Carol Ward of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mark (Sally) Ward of Lapeer, Mich., and Ruth Jackson of Colorado Springs, Colo. Surviving grandchildren are Daryl Jackson and Crystal Jackson, of Colorado Springs, Christian Ward, Ashlee Sperry, and Ethan Sperry of Lapeer, and Jaydee Sperry and Britnee Sperry of Olympia, Wash. Surviving great-grandchildren are Ukiah, Ziah, and Cedar Sperry of Olympia. Raymond is survived by brothers and sisters, Isabelle DeVinny of Orlando, Fla., Anne Stenske of Riverside, Mich., Doris Foreman of Lansing, Clifford (Barbara) Ward of St. Joseph, David Ward of Anaheim, Calif., Louise (James) Chapman of Benton Harbor, and James (Clara) Ward of Lakeside, and a sister-in-law, Marta Ward of El Paso, Texas. Also surviving are 30 nieces and nephews, and numerous grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Delman; and nephews, Keith Foreman and Christian Chapman.Ray lived his life as he believed: being happy and without prejudice.
