Nolan Lee Walker died Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Walker family farm near Blair. Nolan was born on February 13, 1940 in Altus to Leona (Smith) and Alton Walker. He was proud to have lived in Blair for most of his life having graduated from Blair High School in 1958. He was active in 4-H, FFA, and played basketball and baseball for the Broncs. Walker attended Altus Junior College where he was chosen as the first Junior Rotarian, served as president of the Student Senate and was “Mr. AJC.” In 1963, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. In August, 1958, he met Neta Beavers and they were married on February 27, 1961. They made their home in Southwest Oklahoma where he was a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Altus, Martha and Navajo School systems for fourteen years while working as a full time farmer and rancher. From 1980 until 1992, Walker was an employment and training counselor with Southwestern Oklahoma Development Authority and served as assistant to the executive director of the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission. The Walkers were always devoted to their students and provided encouragement to hundreds of area youth. Nolan was proud of the role he played in obtaining education and employment for numerous nurses in Southwest Oklahoma. Walker was a Jackson County 4-H alumnus, served on the Board of the United Way of Jackson County, and the Jackson County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees for twelve years. Nolan is survived by Neta, his sweetheart of 57 years; their daughter and son-in-law, Renee’ and Mickey Gunkel of Altus, their grandson, Preston Gunkel of Oklahoma City; and their grandson and fiancee’, Dalton Gunkel and Sarah Harper, both of Altus. Other local survivors include his aunt, Frances Herron and his brother-in-law, Arnold Goucher. Services for Nolan Lee Walker will be on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Altus with the Reverend David Player officiating. Interment will follow at the Blair Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, of Altus.
