Bio

Pearl Modell Tacy, 93, an Independence, MO resident, passed on December 11, 2015. She was born June 27, 1922 at New Baden, Texas. She graduated from Franklin High School as valedictorian. Pearl attended Durham’s Business College in Austin Texas and received a career appointment from the federal government during World War II. She was assigned to the Office of Chief of Staff with General Eisenhower where she provided switchboard assistance for the Pentagon Staff during critical hours following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. She spent many hours in the Pentagon working under his supervision, typing correspondence for him until he was sent to command all the American Forces in Europe. Pearl married Lester I. Tacy in 1944 and after his discharge from the military; they made their home in Benton Harbor, Michigan, becoming active in the Community of Christ Church. The family later moved to Providence, Rhode Island where her husband was assigned in the Southern New England District. The family later moved to Paris, Tennessee where she directed the adult and youth choirs. Lester was transferred to Lexington, Kentucky where Pearl became Director of Music for the Southern Indiana District. While there, Lester passed away, forcing Pearl to get a job. She became reinstated in the Federal Government and worked in the US Army Healthy Clinic for 21 years before retiring in 1988. Pearl enjoyed gardening and quilting, and has always loved music, including singing and even being involved with a concert at Onset, Massachusetts. Her desire was for all her children to get a good education. She was a member of Harvest Hill Community of Christ serving as an Elder. Pearl was also a strong supporter of the Tacy Foundation. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lester; daughter, Frances Ellis; son, Don Tacy; son-in-law, Darryl Holliday; brother, Frank James Jr.; and sisters: Essie Dotson, Zenell Dotson, Pauline Howell, Frances Petteway, Freida Jett, and Martha Hailey. Pearl is survived by her children: Rilla Fields and husband Ed of Pagosa Springs, CO, Charlotte Holliday of Germantown, MD, Claudia Scott of Many Farms, Arizona, and Lester Tacy and wife Stephanie of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Tacy; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating Pearl’s life will be held at Harvest Hills Community of Christ Church. Date and time to be determined. Cremation has been entrusted to Meyers Funeral Chapel.
