Darryl Dean Buckbee, son of Clarence Robert Buckbee and Maleda Elizabeth (Brass) Buckbee was born Aug. 31, 1936. He passed away Dec. 10, 2015 at his home. Darryl grew up in the Somerford Community and attended Somerford School until the eighth grade then transferred to Sargent where he graduated from the high school in 1954. He moved to Lincoln and worked as a Page in the Nebraska Unicameral where he assisted Senators on the legislative floor. Later, he relocated to Layfette, Colo., where he worked for several years. During those years he also owned and operated a laundromat in Layfette. In the late 1960's he returned to the Somerford Community near Sargent to join his father in his farming and livestock business. In his spare time Darryl would enjoy racing stock cars at various Nebraska locations. In April of 1970, Darryl met Eileen through relatives from Kansas; at Christmas they were engaged. November 18, 1972, Darryl and Eileen were married in Ellinwood, Kan. A son, Darren, was born to them in September of 1973. Darryl purchased a farm in the Somerford Community where he raised crops, livestock and did custom farming. On weekends the family would travel to watch his father's Quarter Horses compete in races. In the late 1980's, Darryl was a board member of the Sargent District Hospital. In helping his local community he would offer assistance for harvest, farm activities, or daily life burdens. Over the years, Darryl witnessed many changes in farming though his love for the lifestyle did not change. The smell of freshly turned dirt energized him in the spring. Harvest brought reward to his labors. Each season provided the opportunity to work closely with family members where work was measured by the task at hand instead of the date on the calendar. Although health issues in his later years made participation in farming difficult, with desire and willful resolve Darryl was able to help his son with farming tasks. A day in the tractor or combine was the best medicine there could be. He is preceded in death by his mother, Maleda and his father, Clarence Buckbee; step-mother, Hattie (Harder) Buckbee; and niece, Mellissa Ash. Survivors are wife, Eileen; son, Darren; sister, Marge and husband Dean Ash; nephew, Bruce Ash and wife Cindy; niece, Sandra Ash; and great-nieces and nephews.
