Larry was born Sept. 14, 1939, at Columbus, the son of Elmer C. and Agnes I. (Sims) Behrens. Survivors of the immediate family include his son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and June Behrens of Grand Island; a daughter, Rachel Behrens of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a brother, Lowell Behrens of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Linda Behrens of Lakewood, Colo.; and a stepsister, Patsy Hutchison of St. Paul. Larry grew up in Columbus, Fremont and Schuyler, graduating from Schuyler High School in 1957. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 7, 1958, serving until his honorable discharge on Jan. 22, 1960. He returned to Columbus and began his schooling at Milford Trade School, completing degrees in both the mechanical and electronics technology programs. He married Lucille "Lucy" A. Palensky on Nov. 16, 1968, at Bruno. They lived in Columbus until moving to Grand Island in 1970. Larry was a mechanic at heart and his passion for fixing and restoring vehicles and equipment allowed him a career doing what he loved — working as a mechanic, in maintenance and service for Sapp Brothers in Omaha, Monfort's, Ore-Ida Foods, U-Haul and Dictaphone, just to name a few. Larry semi-retired in 2005, always finding something to keep busy. Lucy died on Sept. 10, 2008. Larry loved working, repairing and restoring cars. He shared this interest with his children by planning vacations, trips or weekend outings to car shows or rallies. He was proud of his German heritage and loved sharing stories. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy.
